What does a Doula actually do?
The word 'Doula' is Greek and literally translates to "Servant-Women" proving that from the beginning of time women have supported women during childbirth.
Now, in 2019, a certified doula is recognised as a trained professional who can provide physical, emotional, spiritual and informational support to women and their families at this time. Doulas are a constant reassuring presence during birth, and act as advocates for the family's choices during the pre and post-natal period as well.
Just as I've had the pleasure of being at all of my nephews and nieces' births, I have had the privilege of having my 5 sisters at every one of my own three children's births:
